tender teeth for 1–3 days after bonding and some adjustments is normal — cold foods, soft meals, orthodontic wax and your usual over-the-counter pain reliever handle it. Sharp, localized or worsening pain is different: call us.
What normal feels like
A dull all-over pressure ache when biting, peaking around 24 hours after a visit and fading by day three — that’s bone remodelling reporting for duty. Cheeks and lips also spend the first two weeks toughening against new hardware. Both are temporary; both are the treatment working.
The toolkit, ranked by usefulness
- Cold — ice water, smoothies, ice cream: genuine mild numbing plus morale. The single best trick.
- Soft-meal days — the sore-day rotation exists for exactly these windows; chewing tender teeth less simply hurts less.
- Orthodontic wax — for rubbing and poking (irritation pain, distinct from pressure ache): dry the spot, press on a pea of wax. Details in the emergency guide.
- Warm salt-water rinses — settles irritated cheek spots and any small ulcers while they toughen.
- Your usual OTC pain reliever — taken as directed, timed before the evening peak on adjustment day. (A pharmacist can advise what suits you; no special product needed.)
- Silicone comfort covers / rolled wax strips — for the first fortnight’s cheek-toughening phase.
Not-normal pain — call instead
Sharp pain on one specific tooth, pain that worsens after day three, anything with swelling, or a wire genuinely cutting tissue: that’s a call-the-clinic situation, not a push-through situation — (604) 949-0654 reaches our clinic, and repair visits belong inside a proper treatment fee.
How it works at our practice
We tell every patient at bonding what normal soreness feels like and what isn't normal, so nobody suffers quietly or panics unnecessarily. Cold, soft food, wax and ordinary pain relief cover the normal kind; the abnormal kind — sharp, one-sided, worsening, swollen — is a call, and repair visits are included.
