Do braces hurt? The honest answer

The most-searched braces question, answered without sugar-coating.

Dental models comparing traditional metal, ceramic and self-ligating braces.

Getting braces on doesn't hurt — no needles, no drilling, about ninety minutes reclined. The soreness comes six to twelve hours later: a dull, pressure-tender ache when biting, worst on days two and three, gone by day four or five. Some adjustments bring a milder version for a day or two. Cheeks and lips toughen to the hardware within two weeks. That's the whole honest picture.

The three kinds of braces discomfort

What actually helps

Cold — ice water, smoothies, ice cream — is the best trick we know. Soft food for the sore days. Wax on anything that rubs. Warm salt-water rinses for irritated spots. Your usual over-the-counter pain reliever, taken as directed, timed for the evening of bonding day when the ache peaks. Silicone comfort covers for the first fortnight if the cheeks are struggling. None of it is heroic; all of it works. The full comfort playbook goes deeper.

What isn't normal

Sharp pain on one tooth. Pain that worsens after day three. Anything with swelling. A wire cutting tissue. Those are calls to (604) 949-0654, not push-through situations, and repair visits are included in our fee.

Frequently asked questions

Does getting braces put on hurt?

No. Placement is painless. The ache arrives hours later and lasts a few days.

How long do braces hurt after tightening?

One to three days after some adjustments; many adjustments produce almost nothing.

Do braces hurt more than Invisalign?

Braces have a sore week at the start and occasional poking; aligners have a pressure day with each new tray. Both are mild; aligners are slightly gentler overall.

Can I go to school the day after getting braces?

Yes. Pack soft food and wax. Most kids are fine by day three.

Start with an examination

Your first visit is free, and it comes with an honest answer.

We'll look at the bite, take the records that make a real diagnosis possible, and tell you plainly whether braces are the right tool — what it would involve, how long it would take, and what it would cost, in writing. If the right answer is "not yet," we'll say that too and see you again when the timing is right.
