Debond day — the best appointment in orthodontics.
debonding takes about an hour, doesn’t hurt (odd squeezing sensations, no pain), and you leave with clean polished teeth, retainer instructions, and full food freedom.
How the hardware comes off
- Brackets released — special pliers flex each bracket so the adhesive lets go of the enamel. You feel pressure and hear little clicks; the enamel is unharmed.
- Glue polished away — every trace of adhesive buffed off. This is the longest part and the most satisfying.
- Records & the reveal — final photos and a scan for your retainers, then the mirror moment.
Your teeth will feel strange (good strange)
Smooth, slippery, oddly large — after months of hardware, bare teeth take a day or two to feel normal. Mild tenderness from the polishing fades within hours. Then: the first meal. Popcorn, whole apples, sticky everything — all yours again.
The part that protects the whole investment
Teeth try to drift back hardest in the first months after debond, which is why retainers start immediately — usually the same week your custom set is ready. The wear schedule, the retainer types, and what replacements cost are all in the retainer guide. Follow it and debond day’s smile is yours for life; skip it and orthodontics has a second bill. The choice is genuinely that simple.
How it works at our practice
Debond takes about an hour: brackets released, adhesive polished away, final records, and the retainer scan — retainers are fitted within the week and included in your fee. We take a photo for you, because everyone wants one. Retention checks through the first year are included; your dentist watches the bonded wire at cleanings.
