At our practice, comprehensive braces typically take eighteen to twenty-four months; simpler alignment cases twelve to eighteen; complex bite corrections up to thirty. Limited adult cases can finish in six to twelve. We give a range at the free consultation and a firm estimate once the plan is designed from your records — anything quoted before X-rays is a guess.
What sets the length
- The movements needed — aligning crowded teeth is quicker than correcting a deep bite or closing extraction spaces.
- Age and growth — teenagers with growth still available often finish bite corrections faster than adults.
- Biology — teeth move about a millimetre a month in healthy bone. No bracket brand changes that.
- Appointment rhythm — adjustments every six to eight weeks; a missed one delays the next step.
- Breakages and elastics — every broken bracket pauses that tooth; elastics only work when worn.
What you control
More than you'd think. Keeping the food rules prevents the breakages that add weeks. Wearing elastics as prescribed — the single biggest patient-controlled variable in the second half of treatment — keeps bite correction on schedule. Keeping appointments keeps the rhythm. Brushing well prevents the pauses we sometimes have to take for gum health. A patient who does those four things finishes at the early end of the range; one who doesn't finishes at the late end, and the difference can be six months.
Why we won't quote a number from a photo
Because the movements that decide the timeline — root positions, bite depth, jaw relationships — aren't visible in a photo. Some clinics advertise short durations to win consultations; the honest version is a range after records, a firm estimate after planning, and a written statement of what could extend it. That's what you'll get from us.

Can braces be done in a year?
For mild alignment cases, sometimes. For bite corrections, rarely. We'll tell you which yours is.
Do adults take longer than teens?
Slightly, for the same problem — bone remodels a little more slowly and there's no growth to help. Adults comply better, which narrows the gap.
Does Invisalign take less time than braces?
For mild alignment, often. For bite correction and rotations, braces usually win. The comparison.
What if treatment runs longer than quoted?
At our practice the fee doesn't change. The estimate is honest, and we finish the case.
